HARRISBURG - What does a Navy vet, his daughter and $60,000 have in common? A lot more than you think.

Larry McBee is one tough guy who's tackled a lot of tough jobs. His daughter, Kerri, follows suit.

"If you've met Kerri for more than five minutes you'd know," said Larry.

Kerri's son Tucker is a student at Harrisburg Early Learning Center. The school wanted to implement the "Early Reading First" curriculum, a rapidly growing project that focuses on helping younger kids read.

The program requires 11 learning centers, but, the current building is too small.

"So our board said, what do you need and they said more space. So, I said we will build a new classroom," said Kerri.

The next problem was the money.

"Everybody told us it would cost $120,000 to $140,000, we decided we could spend $60,000 to $80,000. My father donated his time pro-bono to serve as the general contractor," said Kerri.

"They didn't want to spend anymore money then they had to. I had knowledge of construction so there was a lot of stuff I knew we could get done for free," said Larry.

"We did whatever we could to cut corners, not quality wise but financial wise. So we could get into this room and not have it be a financial burden on the center since we're not for profit," said Kerri.

However, money wasn't the only issue.

"I think the longest period we had without a significant amount of rain was seven days. As you can see outside we still have some finished work to do on the dirt work," said Larry.

The building kept causing Larry problems, but he kept knocking them down.

"For a pretty good stretch of time I was up here everyday for 5 or 6 days a week," said Larry.

Nine months later the last piece of the puzzle was put in place.

"We ended up saving about $60,000," said Kerri.

But Kerri has one more surprise for her dad.

"We're going to unveil a plaque naming the new classroom in his honor," said Kerri.

"I can't see that I deserve it, but I really appreciate it; it's an honor," said Larry.

Larry and Kerri McBee are two people with very big hearts and even bigger determination.

"It means something to have your family's legacy associated with that - what a better way than with kids learning?" stated Kerri.

Larry's nickname in the Navy was "Mac." The Harrisburg Early Learning Classroom is now called Mac Classroom in honor of him.
