COLUMBIA- Engineers are concerned about the questionable water quality in a local wetland area.

Their main concern is the location of a new well in the Eagle Bluffs conservation area. Several groups presented the concerns to Columbia's city council and suggested the new well could introduce new contaminants to the drinking water.

"We wanted to talk about the waste water treatment in the wetlands and the Eagle Bluff wetlands on our water supply," said Tom O'Connor of the Boone County Environment and Energy Commission. "There's decades of data we've been collecting for a long time. And we've been looking at it and we need to have some public discussions about moving forward with our water supply."

According to a study by The Boone County Environment and Energy Commission, the chloride levels in drinking water increased each year since 2002. The group suggests waste water could have mixed with the wells currently found in the conservation area. The low water quality also means higher treatment costs for the city.

"I hope we can take the time out to reevaluate the proposed location and evaluate some potential other locations," said O'Connor.

The city currently has no plans to move the location of the well.
