COLUMBIA - The Missouri State Historical Society has lost one quarter of its budget from Governor Nixon's budget cuts.
The cut will cost the society more than $364,000 dollars. This is the second cut the society has faced this year. The first came in early June and total the society has lost more than $500,000, or nearly thirty-five percent of its budget.
Executive Director of the society Gary Kremer said the largest cut comes from employee salaries. All twenty-four employees volunteered to take a twenty-five percent pay cut.
"It's a devastating cut for...the staff," Kremer said. "We're simply trying to adjust to reality as all Americans are."
Kremer said the staff volunteered to take the cut instead of facing a massive layoff.
Kremer also said they will have to cut special programs like their special speakers program and the historical theatre program. The speakers program involved historical analysts traveling around the state and teaching local history.
Kremer said losing these programs decreases efforts to get Missourians interested in history through unique ways.
Kremer also said they will use more private money. The society will no longer use public money on microfilming newspapers or on travel expenses.
Kremer said the society hopes to raise private money to help with the Missouri Historical Review, a quarterly published review that highlights local history. The society has published the review since 1906.
Kremer said the decrease in funding is significant because it will cut services. Hours will be shorter, Kremer said, which will cut down on research hours for graduate students and those looking into Missouri history or family genealogy.
