JEFFERSON CITY - There is a battle in Jefferson City over child support balances. An audit came out this week reporting at least 240,000 cases with incorrect numbers.
KOMU spoke with both groups involved in the matter and both feel strongly about their side. The audit came out this week sparking a fight between two state agencies.
Missouri State Auditor Susan Montee stood firm with her findings.
According to the audit approximately 27% of child support cases had incorrect balances.
Total overstatements ranged up to $455,000.
In contrast, understatements ranged up to $55,000.
The audit has triggered a fight in Jefferson City.
"This is a long-term problem. One thing that we found is that they had changed over to a new system in '97 and '98 and the balances that were transferred from the old system to the new system were incorrect. Many of them were incorrect," said Missouri state auditor Susan Montee. "And our problem with that is that they are still incorrect."
"It's really unfortunate for her and I think highly irresponsible to mislead the public in this fashion. It unnecessarily erodes public confidence in our system," said Director of Missouri Family Support Division Janel Luck.
All of the incorrect balances were owed or back payments.
