COLUMBIA - The Columbia Police Department has some tips to stay safe in the ice.

On Thursday, there were more than 100 calls into Columbia Public Safety Joint Communications. Although there were no serious injuries reported and no major roadway closures, officials want you to remember a few things before going out this weekend.

Before you hit the road, make sure your car is prepared. Columbia Police Sgt. Timothy Moriarity says your tires should have the proper tread and inflation levels.

Keeping an adequate amount of windshield washer fluid in your car will help you clear the ice and salt off of your windows.

Moriarity reminds you to clean off your windows and mirrors before driving. It is against Missouri state law to drive with obscured windows.

If you begin to slide and skid on the roads, take your foot off the accelerator and gently apply your brakes. If your vehicle starts to rotate, turn your steering wheel in the direction you want to go, but don't make any sudden movements.

Moriarity and the entire Columbia Police Department reminds you to most importantly, slow down! Increase the amount of space between your vehicle in front of you.

As temperatures drop and the roads glaze over, be weary of black ice. It's difficult to see black ice. You could be on top of it and not even know it.
