COLUMBIA - The Columbia School District has to make major budget changes next year.
The board of education and the superintendent agreed on one way to help the deficit.
Monday, the district announced superintendent Phyllis Chase agreed to take a pay cut for the next school year. She currently makes more than $200,000 a year. The vice president of the school board, Steve Calloway said Chase offered to cut her own salary because she felt it was worth taking responsibility for what happens in the district. Calloway says the district has not made a decision on how much to cut from her salary.
At least one parent in the district thinks the salary cut makes sense.
"If she really does make that much money, I think that it's a good decision. I think about our kids, and you know, I think they're denied a lot of things because of they never have enough money so if this helps them out, then it's a good thing," said Cheryl Decker, parent.
Monday's announcement is just the start in the district's attempts to save $5 million.
