FULTON - The city celebrates 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
All this week and into next Westminster College hosts events leading up 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Winston Churchill made his famous "Iron Curtain" speech in Fulton.
Now the wall, part of which resides at the Churchill Memorial as a sculpture, is an important part of Fulton's community identity and is a main feature at the church that makes up the memorial.
Nancy Lewis, executive director of the Kingdom of Callaway Chamber of Commerce said, "the church has certainly brought visitors to the community, (it) also brings a culture to the community that certainly is something that no other small community in the country has."
The festivities include film screenings, poster contests and museum tours, but perhaps the most anticipated event will be the tearing down of a mockup of the wall exactly 20 years after the wall fell, Monday evening at 6:53 at the memorial. The wall has been working it's way through the entire Fulton community as its citizens help to paint graffiti on the mock-up with messages of freedom and hope... much like the real Berlin Wall was. Organizers will hand out pieces of the actual Berlin Wall for spectators to keep.
Rob Crouse, director of college relations at Westminster College described the events with anticipation,"We have things going on in relation to the Berlin Wall commemoration practically every day here at Westminster and all of them are free and they're all open to the public. And of course at 6:53 the wall is going to come down just like it did that night. We're hoping that people from all over mid missouri will come in and fill our plaza that night."
