LAKE OZARK - Navigating around the lake can be difficult, even for experienced boaters.

That's why Missouri Lawmakers created a law that requires dock owners to post their physical address on their docks. The ultimate goal in this move is to reduce the amount of time it takes to respond to emergencies on the lake.

Nina Gennetten has worked on the lake for 22 years. She says adding signs to docks is definitely a positive move.

"When there is an emergency, the water patrol definitely needs to be able to find the place," said Gennetten. "There's so many coves and stuff in this lake, and it's really difficult to find some of them."

Many dock owners agreed. Ed Bryand says regardless of the cost, the potential to save lives is priceless. He says being on the lake is often risky.

"Safety. That's the important thing," said Bryand. "You're whole family, friends, anybody concerned that's on your docks. There are issues on docks. You have to be very careful and cautious. They're always moving and things happen."

Several local sign makers in the area have already been filling orders. Businesses say they have had more than 100 orders since August, and there's still more to come.

The signs can be costly, but are generally less than 100 dollars. But the Missouri State Highway Patrol stresses that owners don't have to have a special sign made. Dock owners can be more economical by making their own signs. However, they need to make certain the letters and numbers are at least three inches tall. That way, emergency responders can easily see the addresses from the water.

Dock owners have until January 1 to post their signs. If they don't, they could face fines starting at 25 dollars.
