JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Department of Transportation employees are no longer allowed to text and drive on the job.

As of November first, MoDOT employees can't text and operate department vehicles and equipment. The policy also covers employees driving personal vehicles when performing official business. MoDOT officials say they're just trying to keep everyone safe.

"We want to make sure employees are not distracted while they're driving," MoDOT Communications Relations Director Laura Holloway said. "This is an extension of a policy we have that includes wearing your seatbelt, wearing proper satefy gear, and following traffic laws. This is just part of that, and shows safety is a top priority."

Employees say they agree with the policy because texting while driving distracts drivers. If MoDOT employees are caught texting while driving, they will receive a penalty.
