JEFFERSON CITY - Local charities are making preparations for free Thanksgiving dinners.

With one week until Thanksgiving, charities cooking free dinners say it will be hard to prepare them if they don't get enough food.

In the kitchen of the Jefferson City Salvation Army, the menu is set for Thanksgiving, but the food isn't.

"A week from now it will be very, very hectic in here," Stephen Sostrom, a cook for the Salvation Army, said. "We don't have a whole lot set aside for Thanksgiving yet," he said.

The food the group has collected in the pantry is not enough to feed 150 people in the dining room and make an additional 150 deliveries.

In Columbia, 2008 is the 11th year for the "Everybody Eats" Thanksgiving Program.

Coordinator Almeta Crayton said donations are down for many mid-Missouri charities.

"The people that used to donate are not there," Crayton said.

"We have to buy for two different events with the baskets and the dinner," Crayton said.

This year more than 400 families signed up to receive a Thanksgiving basket. Each basket has stuffing, canned goods, fresh vegetables and a Thanksgiving turkey.

Still, charities need donations to finish the baskets before everyone can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. Organizers said they're hoping more donations will be there too.
