JEFFERSON CITY - The freezing conditions made it difficult for drivers and people working on the Highway 54 overpass.

This morning as cold rain fell, in Jefferson City, the Jefferson street bridge hit ground too.

"They disconnected it from the end-bents, or the abutments and once they did that then they were able to chip the bridge and push it down from there," said MoDOT Engineer Terry Imhoff.

Freezing rain doesn't stop kids from looking as construction crews race to complete the demolition. Imhoff knows for some this is a milestone.

"Thirty, forty years ago they'll look back and go I remember when they took the old bridge down," he said.

But up the road, as the rain freezes for a few drivers a different mile marker, an accident may be the way they remember this weekend.

MoDOT's Kent Howard is a slick road pro.

"So far the pavement is slick and it's right on the verge of being able to go either way," he said.

With equipment like pavement temperature sensors, Howard works to get sand and salt where it's needed.

"We're just out to try to make them as safe as we can, get here, get out shoot some ramps and overpasses and bridges and try to hold it off as long as we can," he said.

Workers say the weather is not causing any trouble with the demolition. But cars cruising near the job site are taking it slow as the roads get worse rain freezes on barricades.

"Just slow down, and increase your distance between your vehicles," said Howard.
