MEXICO - Voters across mid-Missouri took to the polls Tuesday voting on school bonds, sales taxes, and in one county, an energy efficiency proposition.

The Mexico Board of Education will borrow $8,000,000 to renovate various facilities throughout the Mexico School District. The Senior High School will see a new boiler to heat the facility along with new air condition systems. The current boiler is nearly 15 years old.

Other renovations include new windows and a new roof to provide better insulation, and a new security system including more surveillance cameras. They will also look to replace aged galvanized pipe lines and add a new water line.

The Director of Operations and Maintenance for Mexico Public Schools says this is the time to improve.

"It's a time where the stimulus package is available and we can get this bond money for zero interest or low interest depending on the length of the bonds we can get it very cheap which is a tremendous savings over the course of five, six, or seven years," he said.

At Hawthorne Elementary a new heating and cooling system will go into effect. Hart Career Center and McMillan Elementary will see a new roof in the plans. And district wide schools will see new lighting upgrades, a new bus barn and occupancy sensors to shut off lights when rooms are not in use.

"It's a good lesson for the kids as well, the kids understand what we're doing and put the money back in the classroom. It's a win-win situation" Ridgway said.

Some voters, however, feel the money would be put to better use elsewhere.

"I hate to pass on the school issue but I think the family ought to come first. We need good paying jobs and lots of them," says Danny Goe.
