COLUMBIA - The Human Rights Commission announced the final selection for the Columbia Citizens Police Review Board Tuesday.

In late July, the Columbia City Council created the Citizen Police Review Board. The nine member panel would heal complaints about the Columbia Police Department. It wasn't until late Monday night that the Columbia City Council selected eight review board members from a pool of more than 50 applicants.

On Tuesday, the Human Rights Commission made the final selection for the review board.

The commission selected Mary Bixby to serve a one year term on the Citizen Police Review Board. Originally, Bixby said she felt she wasn't suited for the position, but after careful thought and consideration she's convinced she's ready.

"We are so wonderful to be here in the middle of Missouri and be a sort of bastion of progressivism and equal rights and I believe in that," said Bixby. "That's why I got on this commission to begin with, so it seems like a natural fit for me."

Bixby will join four year term selections James Martin and Betty Wilson. John McClure, Susan Smith, and Steve Weinberg will serve three year terms. Lastly, Stephen Alexander, Carroll Highbarger and Ellen Locurto-Martinez will round out the review board.

The length of the terms were based on a number of votes.
