MOBERLY - Residents aren't worrying about a levee breach, but water is causing a flood of concern.

Even after the city of Moberly sent out a public notice, some residents are not drinking the water. The city failed to meet the recommended level for the amount of haloacetic acid. Residents like Burt Price and his family are wary of the water.

"We are in fact buying more bottled water, my wife drinks nothing but bottled water," said Price.

He says he is keeping the water away from his kids too.

"It's not something we would let our children drink for a long period of time,"explained Price.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has set the drinking water standard for haloacetic acid at .06 milligrams per liter.  But, the results for the first quarter of 2008 and the last three quarters of 2007 was .061 milligrams per liter. The city is working to get the levels normal, explains Keith Phipps of Moberly Water System.

"The state wouldn't allow us to distribute drinking water if it was an acute hazard. This is a long term effect," explained Phipps.

According to state tests, the water leaving the treatment plant consistently meets the drinking water standards, but levels continue to increase as the water travels through the city's lines.  If you are a resident of Moberly and failed to receive the public notice, click on the KOMU.com Extra to the left to view the letter.
