COLUMBIA - It's on the road again for much of the country Wednesday. And lower gas prices in Missouri came just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday travel.
The $1.89 price looks good after the highs the region has had, but the American Automobile Association says the price is still up about 13% from last year.
According to AAA, 37 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles to get to their Thanksgiving get-togethers this year. 83% of them will take their car. That is about the same as last year, even though the gas prices are still up slightly.
Michael Wissehr plans to go to Southeast Missouri. He says gas prices did influence his decision to travel.
"It used to a lot more than it does now. Now I feel like we can go a lot more places and do a lot more stuff," Wissehr said.
But Missourians shouldn't complain about the high prices. According to AAA, the state has the lowest price compared to the other 49 states. Hawaii came in with the highest, where it still costs $2.72.
Wednesday is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year and not just for those driving. Many of the millions traveling will fly. More than 37 million people will travel this holiday weekend. 12% will travel by air.
