HALLSVILLE - There is talk of Big 12 championships in Columbia these days. One local woman recently won something bigger than a conference championship. She won a world Championship.

Helen Jeavons has no trouble hitting her spot.

Jeavons began shooting ten years ago, when her husband, a native New Zealander and competitive shooter, put a gun in her hands.

"She got persuaded by myself and others to start shooting and everyone could see the potential talent that she had," said Grant Jeavons, Helen's husband and coach.

They were right, Jeavons recently went to New Zealand to compete in the World Action Pistol Championship. She finished 1st in the women's division, and 21st overall.

The key to staying focused for Helen is clearing her mind.

"If you start thinking in words, your mind isn't totally focused on what you're actually doing, so you have to try and keep words out of your head," said Helen.

"The moment that little green man starts talking in your ear you're history. It's as quick as that. You have to be fully focused, and you don't have to think about what you're doing. Your eyes tell your finger what to do, and you just hit the shot," said Grant.

Jeavons says she is yet to peak, and after this year's success, she might have a target on her back in 2009.
