COLUMBIA - The search for the next chief in Columbia Public Schools has stayed relatively quiet, but now a familiar face may be interested in the job.

The district has yet to fill the superintendent post. Chief academic offer Sally Beth Lyon, though, has expressed some interest in the job.

Assistant Superintendent Lynn Barnett said Lyon is still deciding if she would be the right fit for the position, but is interested. She has not officially applied for the job yet, and is not currently a candidate. Barnett said Lyon's already being employed by Columbia Public Schools wouldn't give her an advantage over other possible candidates.

"She's going to study this very, very carefully and if she is not a fit she will not apply for the position," Barnett said.

Teachers at Jefferson Junior High responded to the idea of a familiar face like Lyon as the district's new chief.

"She has been with the district for a while in a number of capacities, so it will be interesting to see what she sees as her strengths and what she might be able to bring to the position for superintendent," teacher Laurie Spate-Smith said.

Columbia Public Schools is accepting applications for the job until Jan. 16. The school board will review the applications and then decide on potential candidates by Jan. 30.
