COLUMBIA - Their trip took thousands of miles and over a half-day of flying, but on Monday morning, a small group of students from Taiwan got a special treat.
The highlight of their trip? Not exactly something most students look forward to, but it was going to class. Anne Mehr's first grade art class at Lee Elementary School had its normal roster - but it also made room for some visitors who were eager to learn about a new culture.
"Lee School is art - they emphasize the art and the music, and we don't have such kind of schools in Taiwan," Taiwanese student Marco Lin said. The group of 16 students from Taiwan's Tamkang University sat in on classes. They also got to work one-on-one with the kids.
Lee Elementary principal Teresa Vandover thinks her visitors were fascinated by the experience.
"I thought they were eager to learn. I could see them comparing their educational system to ours, as well as a number of resources that we had, and our technology," Vandover said.
As educational technology majors, the TKU students paid close attention to how Columbia's students interact with computers in the classroom. Lessons the students hope to take home.
"I will bring the experience and what I saw, what I have experienced back to Taiwan because this is the goals that we are here," Lin said.
The 16 foreign students have been in the United States for nearly a week. They will return to Taiwan on Tuesday.
