HOWARD COUNTY - After a day-long investigation, police confirm what were originally believed to be human bones are actually those of a deer.

Mushroom hunters found the remains Sunday about 3 p.m. in the woods off Highway 40 and County Road 457, about a half mile north of the Katy Trail.

The hunters notified sheriff's deputies.  Deputies secured the scene late Sunday but called off further investigation until Monday morning due to darkness.

The Sheriff's Department resumed its investigation Monday morning as coroners and officers combed the area for more evidence.

One of the mushroom hunters said after finding female clothing near the bones Sunday, something didn't feel right.

"So we started to look around for more bones and we started to find more and more bones - ribs, vertebrae, a shoulder blade. And they just didn't appear to be animal bones, so that's when I called the police - I called 911," said Carl Simmons.

Investigators on the scene confirmed that the bones did appear human.  However, after a pathologist from the University of Missouri did a DNA test on the bones, they all turned out to belong to a deer.
