COLUMBIA - It's bike, walk, and wheel week in Columbia.

But one state biking group says Missouri doesn't make the grade. A new report from the Missouri Bicycle Federation gives the state a "D" for being walker and bicycle friendly.

Fred Schmidt rides his bike almost everyday, which means he only spent eighty-five dollars on gas last year.

"It's really funny that America has gotten to the point where we actually need a little bit of coaching to do what's natural, which is to walk or ride your bicycle to use active transportation," said Schmidt of the Missouri Bicycle Federation.

Members of the Missouri Bicycle Federation say Columbia is the most walker and biker friendly city in the state. The rest of Missouri needs to catch up.

"We need to make a complete network of trails, sidewalks, and bicycle routes," said Melissa Anderson of the Department of Transportation. "What we have is a sidewalk here, a bike route here. It's fragmented. It's very difficult to bike somewhere or step out your door and walk somewhere."

The report says the Missouri Department of Transportation isn't doing enough to accommodate walkers and bikers. But modot says that's not true.

"We're trying to increase the projects that include bike and pedestrian facilities. But we have to make a judgment call on what's appropriate as far as keeping pedestrians and bicyclists safe. And where we can best use our resources."

For now Schmidt doesn't seem to have problems biking in Columbia.
