COLUMBIA- Damon Williams was one of five suspects in the murder of Nathaniel Bentley back in 2008.
A Boone County jury announced the verdicts for 24-year old Damon Williams in the murder trial of Nathaniel Bentley. All three counts of first degree murder, first degree burglary and harmful action came back with a guilty verdict. The gallery erupted in emotional outcries. Williams' mother was put in jail for contempt as well as one of the victim's family members after lashing out and lunging toward the jury. The judge is now talking to everyone who reacted.
It was just more than a year ago when Damon Williams and four friends committed a robbery while under the influence of marijuana.
On June 9, 2008, three out of the five broke into the apartment of Columbia resident Nathaniel Bentley. After resisting one of the intruders, Bentley was fatally shot in the head. The incident took place at an apartment complex at 3610 Pimilico Drive.
There were five suspects in the burglary-turned-murder: Damon Williams, Malcolm Washington, Denzel Smith, Michael Jaco and Quillan Jacobs. The last four received a lesser charge for taking a plea bargain and testifying in Williams' trial.
Sixteen witnesses were called to the stand Thursday, including DNA experts, detectives from the Columbia Police Department and witnesses who were in the apartment at the time of the murder.
A Missouri Highway Patrol crime lab researcher testified to finding two sets of DNA that could not eliminate Williams or Malcolm Washington, another co-defendant in the case.
Another co-defendant, Quillan Jacobs, who testified to staying in the car during the incident, claimed Willliams ran back out after the shooting saying, "I popped him," referring to Bentley.
The trial's defense and prosecution wrapped up their second day at the Boone County Courthouse on Thursday. The verdict was released just before 8 p.m.
