JEFFERSON CITY - The state Highways and Transportation Commission approved 13 new resurfacing projects in mid-Missouri earlier this week.
The state Department of Transportation overbudgeted for past maintenance projects that were paid for by federal stimulus money. Now, the state has $12 million more to spend on new projects. The department's central district saved $5 million and is putting it back into these 13 new resurfacing projects.
"That $12 million is money that has to be used within our urban areas, in cities and communities of 5,000 population or greater," MoDot District Planning Manager Mike Dusenberg said.
Mid-Missouri has six cities that qualify for this money: Columbia, Jefferson City, Sedalia, Eldon, Boonville, and Fulton.
The new projects in Boone County include:
- Interstate 70 Outer Road, from Route E to the end of state maintenance in Columbia
- Route KK, from Route K to the end of state maintenance in Columbia
- Route WW in Boone and Callaway counties, from North Fork Creek in Boone County to Route J in Callaway County
- Route ZZ, from Route TT to I-70 Drive Southwest in Columbia
Pettis, Miller, Cooper and Cole Counties are also affected.
"Some of these projects will be minor one-inch overlay type projects — just putting a hot mix of asphalt one inch on top of what's there," Dusenberg said. Other projects are a more complex concrete overlay called Novachip.
The state has to commit the federal money by March. The bidding process for these new projects will begin in December.
