COLUMBIA - New developments came on Thursday night in the death of a Columbia toddler.
Police arrested two-year-old Cortez Johnson's mother. She's facing charges of endangering the welfare of a child. Keyonda Lumpkin, 26, of Columbia is in the Boone County Jail on Thursday night.
Police arrested Lumpkin after she admitted knowing her son Cortez was being harmed over the course of several days. Police say she failed to get her son proper medical attention. Lumpkin dropped two-year-old Cortez Johnson off at University Hospital on Wednesday. He died there later. Police say he had suffered multiple injuries and there was evidence of abuse. Police also say they are still looking for the boy's father, 26-year-old Horace Johnson.
"We're getting some indications he may have fled the state, but with that said we don't know where he is at this moment. We've certainly notified authorities in surrounding states to be on the lookout for this guy, but he has not been located as of now," said Captain Brad Nelson of the Columbia Police Department.
Both Johnson and Lumpkin have extensive criminal records in Columbia. Lumpkin has been arrested seven times since 2000, primarily for theft. Johnson has been arrested fourteen times since 2003. He was arrested on adult abuse charges in 2006. Police say he does have other children other than Cortez. Investigators are not sure how many children he has with Lumpkin.
The Boone County Medical Examiner office performed an autopsy earlier on Thursday. Details from the autopsy say the cause of death is still unknown, but the examiner says the autopsy confirms the death is suspicious in nature. Police say they are waiting for toxicology reports and other lab work to be finished before a cause of death is determined.
