COLUMBIA - Missouri will look to offer a rebate to appliance customers this spring.

The state is going to use stimulus money from the federal government to distribute the rebate. Two weeks ago, the state sent out a proposal to the federal government outlining its discount program.

"We're not certain how long it will take the department of energy to ask for changes or to make their approval," said Kerry Cordray, a spokesperson for the Missouri Deparment of Natural Resources. "The last we heard is they hoped they'd be able to move their funding along in November."

Among the eligible items on the proposed list are dishwashers and washing machines. Cordray said the department wanted to provide a discount on appliances that consumed too much energy. In addition, all eligible items are energy star qualified.

"In dishwashers and washing machines, you can see huge savings in water consumption," said Gene Lavely, a salesperson at downtown home appliance center. "Sometimes, a fourth of the water will be saved with an energy star product. You can really save an incredible amount of money."

Other items on the list include...

  • Gas furnaces
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Central air conditioning
  • Gas condensing water heaters
  • Gas storage water heaters
  • Tankless water heaters
  • Solar with gas water heaters
  • Electric pump water heaters with an electric back-up)

Cordray also said he hopes the program will continue through the energy star tax holiday in April, while exempts energy star appliances from state taxes.
