JEFFERSON CITY - A pedestrian hit by a marked official vehicle about 10 p.m. Thursday is in serious condition.

Jefferson City Police say on the way to the call, the officer hit a man who was standing in the middle of the highway. Police say the officer was traveling east on Highway 50, while the stalled vehicle was on the westbound shoulder.

Police say the officer hit Norman Carlock on Highway 50 between the Dix Road and Highway 179 intersections. Carlock is 41-years-old and is from Jefferson City.

Police refused to give the name of the officer because of two pending investigations. One is by the Missouri State Highway Patrol to figure out what happened during the accident. The second is an internal investigation by the police department to see who is at fault.

"When EMS showed up they immediately transported the pedestrian to St. Mary's hospital and he was later life flighted to Columbia," said Jefferson City Police Division Capt. Doug Shoemaker.

Shoemaker also later said they don't know why the person was standing in the middle of the road.

Shoemaker said the officer is on regular schedule pending the on-going investigations.

Carlock first went to St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City, then later to University Hospital in Columbia.

University Hospital officials say Carlock is in serious condition.
