COLUMBIA - An old right of passage in high school football is falling out of favor with many football teams.

Many local high schools are changing their two-a-day ways attempting to beat the heat.

"Trying to beat the heat, there is no question about it, we feel if we can go at 6:15 like we did Monday morning, or 7 o'clock as we are doing the next couple of days, we can beat that heat," said Hickman Football Coach Jason Wright.

Well maybe there's more than one goal in mind. More and more area high school football teams are cutting back on their two-a-day schedule.

At Hickman, they're alternating the days they double dip.

"Well this year it seems like its been really easy because they took a whole week off of it, plus its like 80 degrees out here," stated Hickman Sr. Lineman Evan Conrad.

The trend is a big switch from what their coaches went through or at least that's what they tell the players.

"They always had to walk to practice and they never got any water, and they practiced for eight hours a day, you know the coaches back then were just hard on 'em," said Conrad.

Players are just trying to enjoy the break before it passes with the times.

The high school football season starts on August 29th.
