FULTON - Westminster College is well known for its small class sizes and hands-on teaching style. Now, a national magazine is calling it one of the best colleges in the nation.
Forbes magazine says Westminster is the 39th best school in the country, based on academics versus affordability. Take a swift tour through the Westminster Campus and you'll get a nod and a wave.
Forbes ranked Westminster College in Fulton as one of America's Best Colleges. "Folks have thought of us as a hidden gem. We are a gem and we don't want to be hidden anymore," said College President Barney Forsythe.
Harold and Taylor Ussery came from Mount Claire California to see the campus. "I did most of the research. I got some books (and) Westminster came up," stated Harold.
Like Forbes magazine, the Ussery's are comparing how academics stack up against affordability. "Education is one of the top things the price will probably be another one," explained Harold.
Like most parents, Harold scouted out colleges before taking a road trip east. "In the east we're looking at five," said Taylor.
Westminster wasn't even on Taylor's list, but now it's at the top. They say it's a campus where the teacher knows your name and it shows in the number. It's not hard to see why. A part of history is written on the walls.
"If she can get an excellent education and everything she wanted. I'm all for it," said Harold.
Westminster wasn't the only Missouri school on the list. Washington University is ranked number 146, William Jewell College is 249 and MU is the state's top-ranked public college, ranking 264th in the nation. Rockhurst University in Kansas City also made the top 300.
Also on the long list: Drury University in Springfield at 304, Truman State at 445, Missouri State at 471, St. Louis U at 473, Missouri Science and Technology at Rolla at 517, and UMKC at 539.
