COLUMBIA - A new reading program at a Columbia library aims to put books in the hands of children.
The new program for children kicked off Wednesday at the Columbia Public Library. The program offers Columbia children one free hardcover book per month until their fifth birthday.
Newborns receive their first free book by mail, and then parents can register their child for future books. The program wants to encourage parents to read to their children at an early age.
"Reading to a child at an early age is so important for their readiness to read, and their readiness to go to school," said Library Director Melissa Carr.
Registered newborns will start receiving books later this spring.
