JEFFERSON CITY - Kenny Hulshof said he quickly realized that running for governor means he must leave behind his seat in Congress.
"Any time you have an open seat, you have to work that much harder."Â said Paul Sloca of the Missouri Republican party. "You know, it's a daunting task, but we are prepared for it and we think we have the message and the agenda that's going to make the difference and we'll hold that seat come November 2008."
Hulshof has held his 9th District seat in Congress since 1996.
Democrat Judy Baker hopes to claim that open seat, and go from representing the 25th District to representing the 9th Congressional District.
"I am very pleased that it is now an open seat. That does make it easier," Rep. Judy Baker, D-Columbia, said.
Baker said she will focus on issues such as heath care and the economy. If nominated, she said she plans to run the same campaign regardless of her opponent.
Other possible candidates for Hulshof's seat include State Senator Wes Shoemyer, a Democrat, and Republicans Greg Steinhoff and Jason Van Eaton.
