KEYTESVILLE - A Chariton County beef farmer is calling on the governor for help.
Economic woes have come in all shapes and sizes across Missouri. Sue Bixenman has lived in Chariton County all of her life and says large corporations have forced out hog, beef, and corn farmers.
"All of the big corporations moved in, set up, and took away the hogs from the local farmers you know, because they could produce them in bigger numbers," said Bixenman. "They say cheaper but I don't think so."
She and her husband have owned their farm since the day they were married 53 years ago.
Bixenman says there are no large companies at all in Chariton County.
"There isn't any industry. There isn't any hospital, Wal-Marts. We don't have any fast food places no McDonald's no Hardee's or anything like that," she said.
Bixenman contacted the Chariton County Board of Commissioners and held a meeting with local farmers, business owners and bankers to discuss how to better the county's situation.
"We need to start businesses in Chariton County," said Larry Pollard, a Keytesville grocery store owner. "Bootstrap businesses. Our own businesses!"
Bixenman said she wanted Gov. Jay Nixon to offer bailout money to struggling farm-based economies like Chariton.
"I think they need to look into industry for Chariton County," said Bixenman. "And I think they need to help the people of Chariton County the farmer kind of get back on their feet again until they can get some industry in here."
She had hope Gov. Nixon would send one of his representatives to the meeting but no one showed up.
Before the meeting, Bixenman said if no one from the governor's office made the trip to Keytesville for the meeting, then Gov. Nixon "Doesn't care about Chariton County."
