COLUMBIA - A local forum will be held Friday at Lenoir Woods Community Center.

It will focus on understanding how genetics play a major role in alzheimers and how those genetic risk factors will help improve diagnosis and treatment of the disease both now and in the future. Friday's forum is part of the second annual research forum by Mid-Missouri's chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. According to the Alzheimer's Association there are 35.6 million people living with alzheimer's and demential all over the world and the number is expected to double every 20 years with nearly 115.4 people living with the disease by 2050. It is the seventh-leading cause of death and there's still no cure.

Dr. Alison Goates of Washington University in St. Louis will host the forum. She's a professor of neurology and genetics at the school of medicine.  Friday's forum will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and it's 20 dollars to attend.
