CALLAWAY COUNTY - Five out of six fire districts in Callaway County are suing their county commissioners for making districts pay more for 911 services.
But some Millersburg residents are fired up, saying that one governement agency is using taxpayer money to sue another government agency.
"They could have just paid their bill, because now they have gotten into legal fees. Lawyers have been paid over $10,000," said Danny Lamons, former firefighter at the South Callaway fire district.
More than 75 Millersburg residents showed up at a meeting to voice their concerns about the county's fire districts. A vast majority of people raised their hands, demanding that Millersburg Fire Board President Derek Back resign.
The six fire districts include North, South, and Central Callaway, Millersburg, and Holts Summit. New Bloomfield is the only fire district not suing the Callaway County Commission. The six districts generate more than six percent of the county's 911 calls.
The Callaway Fire Board of Directors declined to comment on the lawsuit, still to be determined in Jefferson City.
