COLUMBIA - More than 150 disabled held a forum with statewide candidates today to discuss some issues that affect them.

Some of the individuals who attended said they're still being affected by the Medicaid cuts of 2005.

And now, limited resources are to blame for the increasing waiting lists at disability institutions.

Many of the people at the forum asked candidates how they plan to support people with disabilities.

Some people are tired of government officials regressing on issues that matter to them.

"These people are hurting, and they are looking for help," said Max Lewis, the forum moderator. "This is election time and this is when it makes a difference," said Lewis.

"The legislators need to know that people with disabilities are part of the community," said Mark Satterwhite of Boone County Family Resources. "They are people first and foremost. They are not to be segregated, but supported," said Satterwhite.

"We're talking about batteries for electric wheelchairs. We're not talking about a limousine or anything. They're wanting to live life," said Lewis.

The group invited all eight candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and Secretary of State.

But only half of those people attended the forum.

Chris Koster and Sam Page attended, while Robin Carnahan and Jay Nixon sent representatives in their places.
