COLUMBIA - Stores downtown helped kickoff the holiday shopping season earlier than normal Friday.

Twenty-five downtown stores are participating in the city's first ever "Shop Hop". Those stores will offer shoppers a variety of different deals and discounts.

Store owners worked together to organize the Shop Hop. Amanda Vandertuig owns Butterfly Tattoo downtown. She said the event will help remind shoppers what stores downtown have to offer.

"You go to the mall to get socks and underwear, you go downtown to get a really great gift, that's just how it is," Vandertuig said. "So we have to work together in order to make it more vibrant."

Shop Hop will take place until 9 p.m. tonight. Besides taking advantage of discounts, shoppers can also enjoy complimentary drinks like cocktails and hot chocolate.

Persephone Dakopolos of The District said residents should come out and participate.

"It's a good time to come out see what your friends and family want and then sneak around and buy it right behind their backs."
