FULTON - 24 year-old Victor L. Calderon confessed to defacing the Churchill Memorial.
Graffiti appeared on all three sides of Saint Mary the Virgin's Church, on the statue of Winston Churchill and on the piece of the Berlin Wall. Calderon said "The Berlin Wall represents the downfall of tyranny and I wanted to be a part of that."
Police are also linking Calderon to vandalism at Fulton Family Video and Miller Chrysler Dodge and Jeep. At both locations graffiti similar to that at the memorial appeared on windows and cars. This time the vandals used shoe polish and car window paint that washed off easily.
"I was very glad it wasn't spray paint, if it had been that would've been a disaster," said Gloria Miller, one of the owners of Miller Chrysler Dodge and Jeep.
Paint didn't come off as easily at the memorial. Specialists started cleaning the paint off of the church walls Tuesday afternoon.
"We hope that it will all be gone within the next few weeks," said Rob Havers, the Executive Director of the Churchill Memorial.
Fulton Police held a press conference at the Memorial at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon. They revealed Calderon's confession and added that he was charged with a class C felony including charges of institutional vandalism, property damage and tampering with a motor vehicle. Calderon currently sits at Callaway County Jail with a $35,000 bond. Police said they have another suspect but will not release any more information at this time.
