COLUMBIA - UM System President Gary Forsee announced Friday that he would hold five town hall meetings to address the financial challenges affecting the UM system.
Forsee declared his intentions through e-mail. He will hold a meeting at each of the system's four campuses, as well as the system office, over the next 30 days.
"I want to be sure that we have ample opportunity to engage in a discussion about balancing how we plan to deal with ongoing financial challenges," Forsee wrote.
In the e-mail, Forsee wrote that he has talked to the Board of Curators and a number of statewide leaders about the system's financial status. He provided a number of key points he discussed with them, including several new initiatives the system should consider.
Forsee's e-mail concluded by asking administrators, faculty and staff to review past information he has presented on the topic. He also wrote that they should plan to attend a town hall meeting.
"The budget challenges we face by themselves are likely of a once-in-a-generation magnitude," Forsee said. "But the potential sea-changes confronting us on all sides will certainly be a test for all of us and require a heightened level of focus."
