COLUMBIA - The new Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary School in Columbia is finally in the last stages of completion after more than 130 days of bad weather pushed back the move-in date.
The school district announced that the new elementary will officially open its door to student Jan. 4 after workers complete the carpeting, flooring and playground among other finishing touches.
"We are looking forward to inviting the public out in January to see our latest elementary school," said Elementary Education Assistant Superintendent Jack Jensen. "We think it's a building that they're going to be very proud of."
For now only students from Field Elementary will move in, but next fall, students from other elementary schools will join them. The district says the students will integrate and transition better this way.
"It will help with crowding in a number of our buildings. Derby Ridge is probably the one most affected positively, as we hope to take about 200 kids out of the Derby Ridge attendance area," said Jensen.
Among the schools affected by the boundary changes are Benton, Blue Ridge, Derby Ridge, Lee and Parkade. Information will be sent out to all families affected in early 2010.
