COLUMBIA - The author of the book, Tortilla Curtain, was here Wednesday, the same day Gov. Blunt said he wants to make sure all Missouri state employees are U.S. citizens.
Boyle's story is this year's Columbia One-Read book. Boyle came here to sign copies, answer questions and continue the immigration debate.
"They have to get used to seeing a new group of people living in this community," said Eduardo Crespi, an immigrant from Argentina. "The Latino population of Columbia is growing and not everybody is from Latin America. Many families are coming from other states, are U.S. citizens, permanent residents. Many kids going to schools are U.S. citizens."
The U.S. House and Senate are considering guest worker bills. Both chambers want to crack down on employers who hire undocumented workers. The House also wants to add 700 miles of fencing along the U.S. border with Mexico, while the Senate wants to add only 350 miles.
