COLUMBIA - This Earth Day some Mid-Missourians had a different type of green on their minds, money.
A panel of experts led a discussion on money management with other financial gurus. The Financial Symposium drew people from different backgrounds to discuss and debate a similar subject.
"[We] talked about what's happening," said National Foundation for Credit Counseling CEO Susan Keating. "Both on a national perspective and what is happening locally in the region."
"People from different walks of life and different businesses in the financial industry and get their different opinions," said financial planner Neil Carr.
Although their opinions on the current economic crisis may differ, their financial concerns remain the same.
"Well I think the one thing everybody can agree on in the room is that we are definitely on the cusp of a crisis in consumer finance," said Carr. "Obviously, that has been exhibited with mortgage lending, and now we are looking at that with personal consumer credit."
The message? It centered around two words - change and trust. Change in the form of legislation and trust in the form of regaining confidence in the average consumer.
"Credit card companies right now are taking every opportunity they can to increase interest rates for credit card holders," said Carr. "That's obviously abusing their customer's trust."
"There has been such a focus on the bottom line and earnings that I think some financial institutions lost their way," said Keating.
The experts agree those institutions will be forced to pave a new way.
