JEFFERSON CITY - Two turkeys can sleep safely this Thanksgiving. Gov. Matt Blunt pardoned Stewie and Turkulese Tuesday morning.
Instead of being dinner Thursday, these turkeys will live out their days at the Weston Red Barn farm.
Gov. Blunt originally planned to pardon only one bird, but says that the 4.5 million votes cast through the Department of Agriculture's Web site were too close.
"Yeah, I think we should pardon more turkeys than just two a year," said Eugene Elementary student Alison Morrow.
Last year's saved turkey actually died recently of natural causes, but Blunt said it was not eaten.
