COLUMBIA - Friday marked the first ever Bus Entsminger Golf Classic at the A.L. Gustin golf course.

Guy "Bus" Entsminger played quarterback at the University of Missouri in the 1940s, but his work at Mizzou continued for four more decades as the vice president and vice chancellor of the Alumni Association.

The event benefits the Bus Entsminger Scholarship Fund and the Mid-Missouri Alzheimer's Association.

Bus died in June 2007 at the age of 83 after a fight with Alzheimer's disease.

His grandchildren came up with the idea of having a golf tournament in his name.

"He did so many things around town, especially for the university, and we all thought it was such a great idea," Ty Moore said. "Ashley already had the Alumni Association on board, she had already contacted the Alzheimer's Association, and it just spitballed from there and kept going and just took off."

Former Missouri basketball coach Norm Stewart attended the event and said, "I think everybody in this community wanted to be involved and I'd be one of those people that wanted to be involved with Bus Entsminger, his family, and for a good cause."
