COLUMBIA - Columbia Public Schools Partners in Education goals are to improve achievements and create opportunities for students.
The program is celebrating it's 25th year of helping to make school a little more enjoyable for students. On parent information night at Blue Ridge Elementary, kids get a chance to show their parents their classrooms and what they're learning. But that's not the best part, the kids also get their fair share of ice cream and topping of their choice all made possible by one of Blue Ridge's Partners in Education, First National Bank.
"I just love being around the kids its a lot of fun you get to build relationships. You see the same kids and you get to see 'em grow up,"said Sherry Wyss of First National Bank.
All of Columbia's Public Schools have Partners in Education who work to do similar things at partnered schools. Bradford Farms and the Walmart on Broadway are also partners at Blue Ridge and all of the efforts are about more than just ice-cream.
"The kids get to see different people learn about different business and what they could do as a career in the future," stated second-grade teacher Kren Minor.
Bankers came out to scoop ice-cream for these eager students but its not the only interaction they have. They get hands on experience with the kids as special readers and mentors.
"The bankers love coming down here cause it's a different atmosphere," stated Wyss.
These partners don't only come to the students either, sometimes the students visit them as well.
