FULTON - After months of lobbying for a change in state laws, Ameren UE has given up their bid, for now.
The company wanted to build a second nuclear power reactor in Callaway County that would have cost at least $3 billion and create 3-thousand new jobs.
Many Callaway residents were excited about a new nuclear reactor coming to town. Between the jobs, tax revenue and families that would come along with it, the potential looked promising. But Ameren officials say the issue is dead for now.
The company gave thousands in campaign funds to lawmakers like House Speaker, Ron Richard, and made their lobbyists a daily fixture at hearings and press conferences.
Ameren commercials have been airing telling customers how their bills will not increase, but overall many residents are not buying it.
They say Ameren assumed their bill would pass and did not bother giving details important to residents.
With 15 years until the power demand is estimated to outgrow the supply, this issue will resurface at the capitol.
Next time around, supporters say the company needs to change a few things: give customers specific rate increases, do not assume it will sail through the legislature, and start an early and effective PR campaign to get the public on board.
