JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri State Lottery Commission voted to add a new mega-jackpot to its list of games.
The game is called Mega Millions and with some luck gas stations and grocery stores in Missouri will start selling tickets by January 2010.
Harold Creed is assistant manager at Schulte's grocery store in Jefferson City. He's worked there for 39 years and says he's seen the lottery change over the years.
"We're more than happy for new games and our customers like playing the new games also," said Creed.
Gary Gonder is Director of Integrated Services at the state lottery. He said Mega Millions was only played in twelve large population states, while Powerball was in smaller population states like Missouri. But recently, Mega Millions and Powerball decided to make a deal and cross-sell products. That means, states selling Powerball can sell Mega Millions and states selling Mega Millions can sell Powerball tickets.
"Now they'll go in and see Powerball, $90 million, and Mega Millions, $200 million. And so they'll have a choice as to which game they'll play," said Gonder.
The Mega Millions game is similar to Powerball, which Missourians have played since 1992.
Sherry Stratman says she started buying lottery tickets the last couple weeks.
"I just don't always feel lucky. I have to feel lucky when I go in and buy a ticket," Stratman said.
The luckiest award in terms of the lottery goes to public education. In fiscal year 2009, the Missouri Lottery granted public education in Missouri $259 million. Since the Amendment 11 vote back in 1992, public education received a portion of lottery proceeds.
