ROLLA - Hydrogen cars could be the answer to high gas prices and eco-worries.

The Missouri University of Science and Technology showed off hydrogen cars on Tuesday as it unveiled the first hydrogen fueling station in the state.  The new station allows drivers to fill up hydrogen tanks for just $19, with the car traveling more than 200 miles per tank.

Tanykia Hale took the Hydro-Toyota Highlander for a cruise.

"It was smooth, smooth and just well-efficient, because I mean I do want a Toyota Highlander so that's one of the main reasons I rode it so I just thought they were very nice," said Hale.

The cars were all part of the Hydrogen Tour, a tour transportation officials say is similar to the first ever driven from coast to coast.

"You know it's kind of like Horatio's drive where they took the first passenger car across the entire country," said Paul Brubaker.

A hydrogen car may not look too different from what you drive now, but there's more than a spare tire in the trunk and no noxious exhaust from the tail pipe.

While hydrogen powered cars are not exactly common yet, the Rolla station will serve as a research and testing site. Basically hydrogen can be used either directly in a modified engine or via fuel cells.
