JEFFERSON CITY - At the close of registration, the number of registered voters in Missouri is still down from the previous presidential election year.

Missourians can no longer register to vote in the November elections. Offices around the state stopped accepting registration forms Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

"I just turned 18 on Saturday," said new voter Ellen Kunce.

On the last day, Kunce came in to register for her first election.

"We were in Philadelphia for an open heart surgery. She did not get back from that until the middle of September and then she's been sick, at home sick since then," Ellen's mom, Faye Kunce, said.

Ellen had a rare heart disease. Because of her treatment she did not have time to register, until the last minute.

So far, 1,000 more voters are registered in Cole County than in 2004. Callaway County saw a 2,000 person increase. But overall Missouri has 130,000 less registered voters than it did in 2004.

And despite efforts from campaigns and student groups to get Columbia's youth registered, the number of voters in Boone County also went down by about 1,000.

"The majority position among most academics is that turnout has very little impact on elections," said MU political science chair John Petrocik. "Conventional wisdom is that turnout is important, the more turnout there is the more likely the democrats are to succeed. All the evidence we have is that it's not turnout that determines election outcomes, but defection rates."

It's too soon to tell how these registration numbers will impact the election. Missourians can still file for address changes until the day of the election.

Since the close of registration on October 8 Missouri counties reported about 140,000 more registered voters.  This brings the total for the year to about 10,000 voters higher than 2004 levels.
