FULTON - Plans to build a new landfill are rarely met with enthusiam from the new neighbors, and this familiar "not in my backyard" drama is playing out in Fulton.

The City of Fulton bought 160 acres off of Highway H, half a mile off Highway 54,

Neighbors near the old landfill say they've had enough with smelly trash. But they're not thrilled about a new landfill just down the road. Plans to open a new land fill in the neighborhood has everyone upset.

"We have enough trash to care of ourselves and we can't take care of what we got, how we going to take care of everybody else's trash," said Fulton resident Helen Herigon.

Herigon says the existing landfill is bad enough.

"It does smell when you drive by it, not all the time but it smells," Herigon said.

The wildlife is also affected.

"When it rains this rusty color coming from the creek that runs from the land fill and we had tons of fish die," Herigon said.

But Fulton's Director of Administration William R. Johnson says tests were conducted and the landfill didn't harm the fish.

"About those tests results, they are all within the requirements so we need to do further investigation to see about the fish," Johnson said.

Area residents say the land fill is causing them some problems

"We had an appraisal and it deducted $10,000 because of the land fill," said Fulton resident Beth Ready.

Johnson says the Fulton land fill is going to be full in about four to five years, and now is the time to start scouting for a new location. He also says landfill managers can do a good job for the city and the neighbors out on Route-H.
