FULTON - Girls Town girls are gaining experience and confidance from working at one mid-Missouri store.

Yours, Mine and Ours is a second-hand store that is giving girls the experience they need to get jobs.

"I help teach the girls job skills; how to develop better social skills, and get them prepared to go out into the community and find new jobs," said Annie Hoff, store manager.

Working at the second-hand store is just another way Missouri Girls Town gets its residents ready for life outside its walls. Patricia Tyler, Girls Town lead youth specialist, says it feels good to see them when succeed in the community.

The job at Yours, Mine and Ours in a hot commodity for the girls. Everyone wants it. Jasmine, a former employee identified only by her first name here, says it's nice because once you leave the store you know you're going to progress in the community.

Typically, only three girls work at the store a time.

"Usually work there about six months, then they have more girls that need the training. By that time, they are able to go back out into the community and get another job," said Hoff.

The store is a hodge-podge of everything you could ever need. Hoff says the store has something for everyone, especially the Girls Town girls.

"They have a point system at Girls Town, and they get to come in and spend their points as money. That helps them a lot," said Hoff.

The store's profits cover the overhead. Rent is $1,000 a month and utilities are about $300 a month. The staff's salaries come out of Missouri Girls Town's budget. The administration says it is worthwhile because of the experience and the confidence the girls get from working there.

"It supports itself. It helps Girls Town a lot with the public image, and getting our face out in the community; getting people to know that we're still here," said Blaine Bredeman, Girls Town marketing coordinator.

Jasmine no longer works at Yours, Mine and Ours. She now works out in the "real world". She says Girls Town can be a challenge, but it's possible to do well here. This job gave her a start and some stability.

"You feel better because with the situation, you feel like going crazy because I was like I don't know what to do. But now I do."

Yours, Mine and Ours is not only the name of the store, but also its mission of how the staff wants the girls to feel. The staff wants to give their girls the best start possible. Tyler says his goal is to see every girl succeed in life when they get out of the store.

Another way Girls Town helps the store's workers is by putting half of their paycheck in a spending account and the other half in a savings account. This makes sure they have something in the bank when they leave Girls Town. This weekend,  Yours, Mine and Ours is having its "Everything's a Dollar" sale. The store hours are Thursday, Friday Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
