COLUMBIA - With the nice weather in the forecast, Columbia Water and Light is officially launching a program that will use some of the sun light.
Solar One is a program trying to bring more green energy to Columbia. Columbia customers can now buy solar energy for their homes. Instead of getting energy from coal, residents can choose a few rays of sunlight. Solar One will allow residents to invest in going green without having to pay the hefty prices it costs to buy your own solar panels.
Instead customers will be able to purchase blocks of the solar panels. Customers can purchase 100 kwh blocks for $48 annually or for $4 a month.
To put this into perspective a 100 kwh block will give you the energy to run your refrigerator for 14 days.
Consumers can buy as many as 10 blocks. Columbia Water and Light said it will have a total of 140 blocks available this year through the help of corporate partners. The waiting list opened last week, and Columbia Water and Light said it doesn't think it will have any problem filling those blocks.
"Solar energy is still two to three times more expensive," Connie Kacprowicz of Columbia Water and Light said. "The thought is as more people invest in the technology the price will go down and also the technology will increase."
