JEFFERSON CITY - An arsonist forced a Cole County woman out of her home. Tonight, she is living with her son.
Luckily, no one was inside of the Jefferson City home at the time of the fire. The house was being renovated and was on the market to be sold.
"It's not right," said Ruthie Smith, the home's owner. "I mean, it's my home. I don't know why someone had to come in my house."
From the outside, the house doesn't look that bad. But inside the house shows a completely different picture.
The electricity is off, so the family can't turn on their lights. Daylight shows charred walls and shattered glass all over the house.
"The fire started in a closet of the front bedroom that was the area where the most damage occured. So that was determined to be the point of origin of the fire," said Jack Brade, Regional West Fire District Chief."
I was paying for the house, and I put a lot of work into it," Smith said.
Around 4 p.m., neighbors and a lawn service cutting Smith's grass said they noticed someone on the back deck of Smith's mobile home. The person wasn't identified, and it's unclear whether this person was involved in the arson.
It's also unclear how the mobile home was entered. The front door was locked, and no windows were broken out.
